Proxy Server

A Proxy Server is an intermediary server that sits between a user's device and the internet, processing requests and forwarding them to the intended destination. Proxy Servers are used to enhance security, Privacy, and performance by masking user IP addresses and filtering requests.

Proxy Servers act as gateways, routing client requests through an intermediary instead of directly to the destination server. This helps in controlling and monitoring internet traffic, hiding the original IP address, and applying content filters, making proxies useful for both Privacy and network management.

Proxy Servers are used for various reasons, including enhancing Privacy by anonymising web traffic, improving security by filtering malicious content, and enabling access control. Organisations use proxies to monitor employee internet usage, enforce browsing restrictions, and cache content to improve load times.

When a user connects to a website through a Proxy Server, the request is first sent to the proxy. The proxy then forwards this request to the destination server on behalf of the user and relays the response back. Proxy Servers can be configured for specific functions, such as caching frequently requested resources or blocking certain content types.

Examples of Proxy Servers include web proxies, which allow anonymous browsing, and caching proxies, which store frequently accessed resources to speed up load times. Reverse proxies are another example, used to distribute incoming traffic across multiple servers to improve performance and reliability.
